Benefits of Social Media Platforms
Looking to start social media marketing for your business but don’t know where to begin? Here’s a quick breakdown of the benefits and differences of some of the most popular social media platforms!
This is a visual medium featuring a good mix of photos/images and videos. Instagram allows you to engage with your audiences in a more “social” way. You can build an audience and create meaningful connections with loyal followers. For many businesses, it’s one of the first places people will check for your company.
TIP: Try using all the features provided including stories, carousels, reels, trial reels, live video, and DMs to really maximize this platform’s benefits!
TikTok
Tiktok is mainly a video visual media. It is the ideal platform to let the personality of your brand, employees, and customers shine. The goal here is less polished and more real, relatable content. It’s filled with great opportunities for interacting and creating community with your clients or customers. If your demographic is a younger audience (ie: Millennials, Gen Z, or Gen Alpha), you’ll definitely want to explore TikTok.
TIP: The comment section is as much a part of the user experience as the content itself, don’t neglect the comment section!
Facebook is a mix of visual and traditional social media allowing you to post photos, statuses, videos, and direct links (which can really help drive more website traffic). It can be one of the first places people check for your business to ensure it’s legitimate, especially if your demographic is older! It’s also a great platform to run targeted ads.
TIP: Don’t be afraid to be playful with your content on Facebook if it fits your brand voice. It’s not LinkedIn, it doesn’t need to be taken too seriously!
LinkedIn is a mostly business/professional audience. It’s a great platform to show off expertise in your field. While all content works here (photos, videos, links, etc.), LinkedIn really allows you to prioritize long form content. If you’re a service provider, consider a “networking” approach and show your face occasionally through photos and videos! Plus, it’s a great place to look if you’re trying to expand your team — utilize your personal or team members network to find your next great employee or get qualified applicants through the jobs listing process.
TIP: Try the “Write An Article” feature to share blog content directly on the platform without linking out for better reach!
YouTube
YouTube is a video visual media. It allows for longer form video content and short form vertical video (known as Shorts). You can even post your podcasts here in both video and audio format. If you are a service-based business, this is a great platform for informational content if you/your team are comfortable being on camera. If you are a product-based business, it’s also perfect for showing off product features and usage! Bonus: It’s the 2nd largest search engine in the world!
TIP: You don’t need to match a high-post frequency of other platforms, focus more on quality rather than quantity here!
Pinterest is visual media (with big emphasis on photos) platform. While it falls under the “social media” umbrella, it’s really more of a search engine with a social element. This platform is great if you are a product-based business to show off products and their usage, or if you are a service-based business with client projects that result in beautiful imagery (ex: photographer, interior designer, event planner). Your pins have a “shelf-life” that is much longer than posts on other traditionally feed-based social media platforms. You can also use multiple images or videos to promote the same piece of content (ex: page on your website or a blog post) in a way that other platforms don’t really allow for without user fatigue!
TIP: Pinterest users have traditionally been women, but in 2025, men now account for 1/3 of the global Pinterest audience. If your business demographic is men (or a mix of men and women), you definitely want to explore Pinterest for your business!
